A seed of passion takes root

It all began in 2018 when Sabrina Currie, a culinary school graduate with a love of food styling, started West Coast Kitchen Garden as a creative outlet after her children were born. She had a deep love for local, seasonal food and a dream of transforming her busy city yard on Canada's west coast into a "food growing oasis." The blog's name simply fit her vision, and she launched the website on a free WordPress theme, initially just to share her recipes and thoughts.

But things quickly started to bloom.

Within months, the team at Edible Vancouver Island magazine noticed her work, and she soon got a regular column featuring gardening tips and seasonal recipes. And soon after that, she connected with the Food Bloggers of Canada community, and realized her passion could actually become a full-time career.

From that point on, she carefully grew her blog as a dedicated side hustle.

Cultivating growth

She admits she didn't know much about SEO at first, but her blog grew "slowly and steadily." While building her audience, she also started making some money through sponsored posts with various food companies.

By July 2023, Sabrina had met the threshold to qualify for a Google Certified Publishing Partner, whose experts managed and optimized all the ad placements for her site.

From there, her success continued to accelerate and by December 2024 she reached the threshold to join Raptive, another Google Certified Publishing Partner. After this, her readership grew significantly and her blog's earnings eventually surpassed her full-time hospital job, allowing Sabrina to take the leap to dedicate herself entirely to West Coast Kitchen Garden starting in April 2025.

"It is so exciting to be doing my dream job full-time, finally," says Sabrina.

Through it all, ad revenue has allowed her to keep her content accessible and free. "I enjoy creating but I don't like selling. I love being able to offer my recipes for free to everyone. Ads let me do this while paying me for my work," she explains.

A garden full of possibilities

Today, West Coast Kitchen Garden reaches over a hundred thousand readers a month, who all share a passion for cooking, dining out, and consider themselves true foodies. Sabrina’s most popular recipes, like Ooni pizza dough, Greek spinach salad, vegan rhubarb crumble, and miso baked oysters, always get rave reviews for being delicious, dependable, and easy to make.

Sabrina loves every part of creating, from coming up with recipes and styling beautiful photos to building helpful and eye-catching web pages. And running West Coast Kitchen Garden has truly transformed her lifestyle.

"Earning money from my website has finally allowed me the freedom to work from home and have the flexibility to help my kids at school and elsewhere whenever they need it," she shares.

In addition to her regular column in Edible Vancouver Island, her blog has also opened doors to radio interviews, and even a cookbook, set to be published in spring 2026.

Looking ahead, Sabrina is eager to delve into more video content and expand her email newsletter now that she is focused on the blog full-time. She also plans to strengthen her presence across other social media platforms, and is open to exploring a second blog in the future.

"The creativity of blogging feeds my soul; it is a privilege to have a job I feel passionate about," she shares.

She sees blogging as her "final career"—a joyful journey she can keep cultivating and growing, even into retirement.
