Whipping up a passion project

For Terri Gilson, the journey into the world of food blogging was a natural extension of her deep-rooted love for creating, cooking, and a desire to share her creations and preserve her cherished family recipes. What began as a simple Facebook page in May 2016 to share her culinary creations, soon evolved into Food Meanderings, a popular blog that now welcomes over hundreds of thousands of pageviews each month.

The name "Food Meanderings" perfectly captures Terri's philosophy: a delightful exploration of her eclectic culinary interests, while always emphasizing recipes that offer shortcuts, accessible ingredients, and minimal kitchen time. Her mission also extends beyond the plate, promoting healthy balanced eating and sharing her insights into successful weight maintenance.

Her most popular recipes often have a seasonal appeal, like her Rhubarb Coffee Cake and Saskatoon Berry Pie in warmer months, or her comforting Grandma's Butter Tarts and Perogy Pizza during cooler seasons.

A recipe for growth

A pivotal moment for Food Meanderings arrived in 2018 when Terri decided to pursue a monetization model that would support her passion, while allowing her to keep her content free for readers.

She teamed up with Mediavine, a Google-Certified Publishing Partner, who helped to manage her digital ad placements and provided a sustainable income stream that allowed her to cover the growing costs of running a professional website.

“I always wanted my recipes to be accessible to everyone. Personally, I find it frustrating when I can’t access something on a website because it’s behind a paywall or I need to sign up and pay a membership fee. So it didn’t feel right doing that to others. And given that I work during the week, I needed the blog to be making income when I wasn’t working on it,” Terri explains. "My revenue is because of ads. Ads work really well because it's passive income.”

Terri has also had some help from Google's publisher tools along the journey. "I use Google Search Console and Google Analytics all the time," she shares. “Google Search Console helps me to understand what keywords I’m ranking for and track their progress, my ranking position, changes in rankings, and CTR. Google Analytics helps me to understand what pieces of content are getting the most traffic and analyzes my traffic by seasonality and popularity."

She's also started experimenting with Google’s AI tools. "I have started using Google AI Studio for assistance with updating posts, such as getting suggestions on how to improve the content and I love it! I’m excited to learn what else I can do with it."

Serving up heartfelt connections and diverse flavors

Beyond the metrics and monetization, the true heart of Food Meanderings lies in the connections Terri fosters with her audience. She is deeply moved by messages from readers who find her recipes taste "just like their mom used to make.” Equally touching are notes from elderly individuals, particularly men learning to cook after losing their spouses, who thank her for providing easy, comforting recipes.

“These are the connections that warm my heart and give real meaning to what I’m doing. I almost cry when I read them. That's why I do this. It feels so good.”

Looking ahead, Terri envisions a future for Food Meanderings that continues to evolve. She foresees exploring more video content, writing an e-cookbook, and is also keen to expand into new passive affiliate income streams.

But her core philosophy will always be to remain true to herself and her meandering culinary interests along the way, no matter how eclectic and diverse.
