Getting Started: Video Captions

Print

When watching a video with captions/subtitles, you can...

Turn them on and off:

  1. Click the "up arrow" button on the bottom right of the video player.
  2. Click the captions/subtitles menu button. This button will only be clickable if there are captions/subtitles for this video.
  3. You can also turn caption display mode on or off by clicking in the player and typing 'c'.

Change the language:

  1. Click the "up arrow" button on the bottom right of the video player.
  2. Click the "left arrow" next to the captions/subtitles menu button. This button will only be clickable if there are captions/subtitles for this video. You can also try Auto-Translate of captions, if captions/subtitles are not available in preferred language.
  3. Select the language you'd like to see subtitles in. Subtitles are only available in the languages shown. Video uploaders choose the languages for their videos' captions/subtitles.

Change the background style or font size:

  • To toggle the background shading on or off, click in the player and type 'b'.
  • To make the captions bigger, click in the player and type '+'.
  • To make the captions smaller, click in the player and type '-'.

Request machine generated captions (automatic captions) based on speech processing (BETA):

  1. Click the "up arrow" button on the bottom right of the video player.
  2. Click the "left arrow" next to the captions/subtitles menu button.
  3. Click Transcribe Captions. This option will only be shown if automatic captions are available for the video. This feature is experimental and is not yet available for all videos.
  4. Click OK to request automatic captions.

YouTube uses experimental speech recognition technology to provide machine generated captions. Although they're not perfect, automatic captions help make video content accessible to deaf and hearing-impaired users. While we develop this feature, automatic captions are only available for English videos on selected channels.

The transcribed captions are only visible while you are watching the video. If you reload the video, or browse to another page and come back, you must request caption transcription again.
