As many of you are aware, we've added Google Apps Engine based caption
editor in TestTube.
We’re always excited to hear your thoughts about new releases: what
you love, what you hate, any suggestions you have for us. You can give
us your feedback on our caption editor: CaptionTube (http://
captiontube.appspot.com/) by responding to this post.
What I saw of it was looking very good, especially when considering
it's still in testing.
However, for whatever video URL I enter when prompted, I recieve the
notice that reads to the effect of, "Please enter a valid URL for this
video. Videos cannot be imported if they are private or do not allow
embedding."
It is possible for me to import videos successfully, but when I open
the CC editor, the video refuses to buffer, making it impossible to
caption it. (it does read the correct video length of 3:26).
Any ideas as to how I can sort this and test run the application for
you? I look forward to it.
As for YouTube, when the app is improved enough to release it for all,
I'd love to suggest a few integration features to help captioners,
such as a "add caption request" button on other posters' video pages
which you've captioned (posters could be able to preview the
captioning on their video), and a link on the bottom of vid
descriptions which says "caption this video" (or "offer caption
improvements" if captions exist).
As more and more use the internet such as the hearing impaired,
elderly and non-english speakers, captions will be a huge step forward
in making media accessable again, and it's great that the captioner is
in development. YouTube should do all they can to make captioning
known to people - 'Caption Your Creation'.

this was probably the most helpful app in the universe.
before i was writing all this code. but with this app, i created
captions for my video "The Fred Experiment" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1e0jVYO94A ) in a flash. Thanks for this awesome app!

The file extensions are not being created for the files download.
Which is ironic considering the format choice radio buttons reference
them, (.sub) (.srt). Yet the file you download doesn't have a file
extension, which causes you to not identify them when you go to upload
them into the video.

Well it has one good feature I guess: It plays the video *without*
captions, and displays the captions below in another window. Otherwise
I can't watch captioned videos to test if the text comes up correctly.
I get... maybe umm about 0.5 fps? on average with captions on;
something like that. But with *this* utility I can watch an
uncaptioned video, and see when they *would* show up just as if the
caption feature was actually working! So that could be useful.
For me, it's not very useful for *creating* captions, since I never do
the timings and the words at the same time (rule of thumb: "Never
combine repeated operations"). So first I extract the text, and then I
have my speedy way to get the timings down just right. I can get all
the timings in perfectly for a 10min video in about 15mins. I can
extract the text without times in about 1.5 hours.
Proposal:
If this utility were able to accept a captions file to be played
alongside the video "as if" previewing a captioned video, then it
would be of great use (to me anyway). At present I cannot test my
captions so our captioning project (a month or so in now) has come to
a halt.
caption tube is pretty cool. I wanted to make captions for a video a
long time ago. I used a program you said an i made the captions. I
couldn't upload it because I didn't know what file to save it as. I
used caption tube and Now i could actually SEE the video while i made
captions, where i couldn't in the program. It was really cool and I
will definitely use it again!

It's a great tool, but still relies on being able to edit captions.
I'm still not able to edit the caption tracks for my videos, because
of the known problem with special characters in the filenames causing
a script error. Please have a look at it :-)
Step 1: Create a file (using notepad say) for your captions with the
extension .sub, for example:
C:\MyDocs\MyCaptions.sub
Step 2: Edit the file in this manner
Start of file (NOT including the dashed line below)
The first line must be blank or a time stamp.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
00:00:00.000
This is the first cation starts at beginning of video. If it's too
long like this one it will auto-wrap.
00:00:02.323
This is the second one
but it has two lines
00:00:03.560
[♪ some music is playing ♪]
00:00:04.560
00:00:05.560
The above "blank" cation turned off the music caption.
00:00:07.560
Notice that I can put in Chinese characters
too like this: 道 , if I really wanted it.
-------------------------
End of file. The dashed line above is NOT included the file.
The last line can be blank or part of the last caption or a time stamp
ONLY.
that all captions must be separated *by a blank line* as shown in the
above example.
Step 3: Now select "save" for your file, and MOST IMPORTANT: make sure
to set the encoding to UTF-8.
Step 4: Now upload your file and it should work. You will see a blue
bar indicating success.

A very awesome feature. I think it is excellent as you do not have to
use third-party programs which you may have to buy and if you cannot
be bothered you can simply go to the caption editor. It also has a
friendly interface and I think that you should keep working on this as
it is a great relief for many users so that their audience can apply
to foreign viewers or viewers with hearing difficulties.
