I've detected another thing now, as well. Why have a 256KB limit on it
at all. I mean, I uploaded an image that was 120KB, but when I checked
the file size after it was uploaded, it was literally compressed right
down to "16KB". If you don't believe me, check my channel page (my
current halloween thing...)
When direct-linking was in place, none of this was a major issue.
There are plenty of videos on your site about how to get an image
background! So understanding how to get one wasn't an issue, and I
really don't know why you took it down in the first place.
If you really want to host peoples backgrounds, then stop compressing
peoples images, for a start, or more preferably, reauthorise direct
linking!

Same problem here. I upload an image, it shows up immediately in the
preview, but not in the background itself. And while 256K may be a
reasonable size limit for a background for most sites, this is
*Youtube*. A streaming video site. When you're streaming megabytes or
even gigabytes of video, you don't really mind a 1MB background image.
Not only that, you JPEG-compress it at some stupidly low quality? WTF.
Yeah, can't have those background images eating up a whole 0.001% of
your bandwidth, let alone 1% of the user's.

I think that we should be allowed to use a url because then there's
really no limit to the filesize. Which is good because then we wont
have to use any compression crap which really makes the images look
bad. And I've had similar problems too like when I go to upload a
background, I select my PNG background which is usually around 80kb
then I upload it and it doesnt appear as my current background it
still uses the previous one, alright so I'll convert the PNG into a
GIF, upload it, still doesnt appear as my background, I even wait 5
mins after uploading before pressing the Update Channel button. Still
doesn't work. I think YouTube might need to rethink about how they
handle their background images. Bring back the URL please.
This new youtube channel background image sucks. I can never upload an
image because youtube says it's too large it's like I can only upload
a 64x64 image (which is like just as small or even smaller than an
avatar). I liked it better when you can just place the URL of the
image.
I gues I won't be able to change my background for a while...
I hate this new background option, I liked the old one much better.
I admit this is a good feature for the average user who doesnt care
much about their channel design, also theres no chance of the image
not being available as its held within youtubes own servers, plus it
lowers the chance of people using copyrighted material on youtube...
still can though, save the image, upload it, viola!
I wouldnt mind having to upload my background to youtube if the size
limit wasnt so small, but that isnt the main problem, that doesnt even
phase me compaired to the fact that youtube converts the image that I
upload that is an acceptable file type and in the acceptable file size
to a low quality jpg file.
Even if you upload a jpg file, thats under the file size limit, its
still converted to a lower quality version of itself!
Ok fine, youtube wants to save space... what? O.o
Save space?!
I may be wrong but why lower the image quality to make it a smaller
file size?
Only thing I can see in lowering quality is to save space, right? (and
make us hate them? maybe, who knows... =/ )
So then why isnt there an option to use an image that isnt held on
youtubes servers and isnt using youtubes bandwidth and space?
I dont know, I just dont know...
Anyway, my decision, if you hadnt guessed already, is to bring back
the old URL linking for a background image.
I dont mind having the upload an image option besides it, its a good
feature, and a good idea, its just not designed or thought out very
well...
I agreed.
Ever since Google bought YouTube, many of the decisions are just
showing
how bad monopoly can be. No matter how we user beg them to bring back
the original features, they just don't and ignore it.
First with the Player, then with the video size, now the background.

I had given up trying to get my background back to the original
formatting until today. Unfortunately, the only way to upload an image
with a file size of 256k and not have it have poor color quality or
resolution is to invest in photo imaging software.
I recently purchased PaintShop Pro Photo X2 and was playing around
with it and found that it would export my original background into
a .jpg file size without compromising on the quality of the image too
much. My background is now set to what it was before YouTube decided
to modify their system. Yay!
everytime i go to my channel design and try to scroll down and it will
not let me scroll down on there at all. i have tried everything to try
fix the problem but it seem not to work at all what so ever. so does
anybody out knows what i can do to fix this probelm.and please tell me
what to do by step by step please.you can email me at
[email address]. because i'm always on there all the time.
