3. Use the "Browse" button to find an image on your computer you would
like to use. Upload an image that will display as a background on your
channel (maximum 256K).
4. Decide whether you'd like your image to repeat across your channel
or appear only once. Choose "Yes" or "No" next to the "Repeat
Background Image" text.
5. Click the "Update Channel" button.
(NOTE: You can no longer use a URL linking to an image hosted by
another site for your background image. If you still have a URL in
your Channel Design settings, you will need to upload a new image
using the instructions above. Animated images are also no longer
allowed).
That is great update, thank you. However, I have an issue with that
new update.
Whenever I try to upload a background image, I get the following
error:
Failed (invalid file format)
It's 1x316 and it's a .JPG image made in Photoshop.
Thank you.

As wonderful as the new update is, I'm having a similar problem
uploading a new background image.
You see, I uploaded an image a week ago, and well my channel being
like my mood, it changes constantly. So when I deleted the image and
then clicked on the "browse" button the file box that is supposed to
show up doesn't.
I would very much like be told how to get around this or at least what
the hell is going on.
Thank you.

Ah, sounds like a nice update. Though, I would have preferred a hybrid
system of being able to use a URL or the upload function.
Btw, the browse button is cut off (by the white border of the preview).
And you know, after Youtube performs its weekly maintenance regimen,
the background image uploading feature works just fine.
Not sure what to tell you about the browser button though. *shrugs*

Argh why can't we use URL anymore? That just ruined everything for
me : (

Can you please make it so you can either upload an image or put in a
url because when I upload my image the quality is really bad.

I am sick of failed uploads, because my templates are too big / small.
At least have the best of both worlds, and have the option to direct
link, AND the option to upload. 256KB, is far too small! I prefer
direct-linking from Photobucket, because you can use decent sized
(templates, in my case), images. YouTube usually destroys the quality
of an image as well, if it reaches anywhere near 200KB.
Bring back direct linking!

The new update is visually easier because so many people have
expierience with the common "browse for picture" thing, but when I try
to upload my new background, it never loads. It sits there and doesn't
do a thing. I don't understand why.

This is the one of the worst updates Youtube has ever put it's users
through. What happened to our freedom? Now we can't even have a good
background image for our channel? That is seriously shitty. Please
excuse me for the language, but it is just so retarded. Let me share
with you my story. Today, I thought it was time to change my
background. I've had it for a while now and it was starting to look
dull. So, I fired up MS Paint and got to work. After about an hour of
putting together assorted images and sprites, I fired up Adobe
Photoshop to finalize my new background. After 2 and a 1/2 hours of
work, I was finally done. The image came out to 701KB. Not bad at all.
So, excited to share my work with my friends and viewers of my
channel, I quickly rushed over to imageshack to upload it. It uploaded
rather quickly, quicker then it usually does. I was even happier. Then
I opened up my channel edit page, and found a browse button. I said,
"Okay, so Youtube hosts images now? That's pretty neat." Then I look
directly underneath the browse button to see that the file size limit
was ONLY 256KB. THAT IS PURE BULL. I went into a minor rage. When I
pulled myself together, I decided all I could do now was compress the
image. I let out a deep breath, and got back to work. Another hour
goes by, and I finally get the image to 248KB. In order to do that, I
had to cut off 1/4 of the image, save it as a GIF with edited colors
for less quality, and delete certain high resolution images.
Frustrated, I went back to upload my butchered work. Now, I uploaded
it successfully! BUT IT WON'T EVEN SHOW UP ON MY PAGE. EVERYTHING I
DID WAS FOR NOTHING. NOTHING! Youtube is no longer the same user
friendly video sharing site it used to be. It's just going to crap now
with the worse updates you can imagine. Here are some suggestions:
1. Get rid of the hosting crap, because you obviously can't do it.
Give the URL linking feature back.
2. Raise the file size limit. Make it AT LEAST 5MB. That would be
fair. AND MAKE SURE IMAGES YOU UPLOAD ACTUALLY WORK.
I'm sure everyone would prefer option 1, because it just makes
everything easier and provides more customization. (Animated GIFs for
one thing.) Please Youtube, the community is begging you to fix this
unwanted update. Thank you.
I like this idea and all, but why can't you guys make it where we can
have url images AND upload it from our computers? That's an even
BETTER idea.
also, I have a problem with it. My background is NOT showing up on no
matter what image I upload.
personally, I liked it way better when it was just the url.

Timmy there is a glitch with new accounts I have noticed. I recently
uploaded a tutorial on how to do this and many new channels are having
errors when they try to do this. One guy even gave me his password
and I went into his channel and I could not for the love of me upload
a background. I couln't even upload my background to his channel.
For some reason this is only for new accounts, can you find the glitch
and fix it?

Hello Everyone and hello Youtube representatives I'm dctcool on
youtube and I'm the current YourTubeAdvocate
I posted a video on the YourTubeAdvocate channel asking the users if
the size limit is too small, and the response to this issue so far
seems to be unanimous, it doesn't seem right that you guys can take
100MB 300MB 1GB videos every second for videos uploaded but can't even
spare a single MB for the backgrounds
On the Plus side those who commented are glad that you guys got rid of
Animated backgrounds
The WORSE update youtube has ever put out, why did you do this, i
think it's 1 of these reasons (or both of them) 1: because the newer
youtubers, are having trouble doing this, or because of hotlinking.
Now why did you get rid of animated images?!?! the file size limit is
too small, bring back the old way! youtube, just do it both ways, or
something like that, it will make everyone happy!

" Animated images are also no longer allowed "
Why the hell not? It took me hours making mine.
All my friends' background are STILL animated because they never
changed it since this new update.
I wish I'd left mine alone, at least then it would still be M-O-V-I-N-
G. It's not fair, YouTube should allow animated gifs for
backgrounds..! I'm not the only one, so many others are complaining
too..
Hi, I'm updating a channel at the moment and it will not display the
background image.
I can choose the file, hit upload and it appears to upload the image.
However, at that point, the button to 'Update Channel' greys out and
you can't save the change.
I'm getting the same error when I try to change my channel's
background.
I choose the background image and Youtube seems uploaded it. But I
can't click button "Update channel". I'm using Firefox and when I open
the Error Console I get the following error:
"Error: uncaught exception: Permission denied to get property
HTMLDocument.getElementsByName"
I think there is some JavaScript issue. I think you may use
getElementById instead getElementsByName.
Two friends of mine tried this change on Internet Explore and got an
JavaScript error.

I tried right now and the JS error has gone and my channel is 100%
customized.

okies so i like the new idea that ya can upload yer own images, with
the max file being 256K, pretty snazzy man! Buuut i have a problem
finishing my upload;
I upload the image no problem, but then when i try to click "Update
Channel" the button isn't..well clickable. And this happens only after
the image is loaded. The image is want to use is not over the limit,
it is 204K, at 1024x1024 res.
Someone please help me cos my Channel is looking pretty cruddy now =[
God dayum getting here was hard...asked my gmail then re-asked youtube
and then said go to community and search it there...geez guys, fix
this thing up. Convenience, ur doin it rong!
I've been working with photoshop for a little over then 5 years now.
If there was anything about photoshop that an average user must know I
already do (and probably a lot more). I'm also hired as a web designer
in a computer repair company.
I finally got some time to update my channel. I tried uploading a
background image (which is a pattern - its a long image that is
supposed to be repeated and cover the whole background) and it kept
saying "Error: Invalid File Format". The file size is 23K (well below
256K), I tried JPG, BMP, and even GIF, none worked.
I don't really know what type of image is considered "valid" here, I
tried the most common ones and it was a futile attempt. Please let me
know what you consider valid and I'll use that. Thank you very much
have a nice day.

i saw someone said we need to wait for the upload to complete
processing then the update changes button will work. mine sits for
hours and never does let me complete the update of background image.
very frustrating as i'm well below the max file size and have followed
all the rules i know of. what gives?

Why can't we have the upload OR link option? #1 - It limits the
options dramatically to have to use such a tiny image / #2 - if amount
of storage space is an issue, then why wouldn't you allow people to
use an image link that you don't have to host? I think this option
should be reinstated.
