Just why is this gone? What's the reason for it? Youtube is still
excruciatingly slow when it comes to uploading videos, but now they do
away with this feature so I can't even tell how long it's going to
take?

Seriously Youtube, you're owned by fucking Google, why are you taking
away features? You can do better than this.

The upload progress bar has been gone for months. However, if you use
the multi video uploader, that will tell you how your upload is
progressing.
