How can I upload a full-length movie as the "studio" accounts, and
others, do? I see it can be done by users or presumably very small
groups (look up "hunt for gollum" which is under a new account, a non-
studio, and with only the one movie uploaded). There is no
information on youtube about doing this, but I know it's possible. I
wish to officially upload a movie without having to break it up into 8
or 10 pieces, but youtube's robots don't seem to realize what I want
to do.
Ordinary YouTubers are restricted to a little over 10 minutes per
video. You'll need to either be a partner (so you'll have to upload
lots of videos which don't break the rules and are quite popular, and
then apply) or have some other form of branded channel (which cost
tens of thousands of dollars). However, I notice that huntforgollum is
a partner, so perhaps if you are, say, a film student or an
independent producer, you might be able to persuade YouTube to let you
have a partner account.
Then you have to make sure you have the rights to every last second of
your video, which can be an expensive and time-consuming business if
you've used a lot of music and sound effects. Everything must be
properly licenced and you may need to be prepared to provide proof of
this.
Also make sure you have the express permission of all the actors, and
of anyone else who may have some claim on it (for example, the
director).
The movie in its entirety (including all performances therein) is
released under a Creative Commons attribution-share alike license,
meaning it is freely distributable for free or for profit by anyone.
Furthermore I am acting as an agent of the filmmaker herself, and
though my intention would be to post the movie for 'free', if I were
to sign up for a partner account and the video generate income, a
major portion of it would be going to her (that, of course, is neither
here nor there). It seems youtube doesn't make this process very
friendly for an independent filmmaker who has, for example, made one
film.
