This is extremely frustrating. When I go to respond to a video with
many comments, and want to see the latest comments, it forces me to
click through every single page before seeing the latest comments.

Actually, there is a link that says 'Newest'. The commenting is based
on showing the newest on the first page (this link appears all but the
first page) and the oldest on the last. So new messages should appear
on the first page. If they don't they might be a reply to another
comment or just not in the latest update. You will probably spot them
on the 'All comments'-page. If not, you will probably have to wait
some time.
I think you're wrong about many videos. Consider, for example, Tay
Zonday's "Chocolate Rain" video (watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA). Where is the
"Newest" link? Where, I ask you?
