ya that's very annoying.. it gives the video the illusion that it's
SMALLER!! One video I watched it just stretched it way out so it's
like letterbox all the way across.. the top had black bars not the
side but it was already wide so it really stretched it out bad..

Great work guys but if the video is not in 16:9 format i think the
player should stay in its old "box" shape. However this is still
awesome. I'm sure theres some way to program the player to detect this.
I really welcome this idea
Videos are now much bigger and has better resolution. It really makes
youtubing becoming an even better experience for everyone.
I do hope however, that this improvement isn't the last of it, because
i believe if youtube is able to render a 80% quality of the original
video to be shown, then that will be even better.
But nonetheless, keep up the good work!!
Would you just shut up? Honestly. All you've done is spout capsed
words.
16:9 is a great idea, but they need to have a ratio changer either on
the video player itself (like there is for annotations and full
screen) or under your account settings (under playback options).
I love the fact that we can view videos in 16:9 now, the video player
way way too small for this day and age. Go around and look at all the
other popular flash video players. They are much bigger in size
compared to Youtube's 4:3 player.

Two things:
1) Give users the choice between 4:3 and 16:9
2) Tell user what qualifies as HQ video in the new aspect ratio format
(so we don't need to upload several test videos to find out)
This really looks terrible for 4:3 videos and especially the older
widescreen videos that now have black bars on the left and right sides
as well as the top and bottom sides.
What you need to do is this: Make a video tool where people can auto
zoom there videos to fit the new size, also, maybe not have the
widescreen video player box for normal 4:3 videos.

What if I were to tell you the resolution of the new widescreen videos
were less than the non widescreen? Would you feel cheated then?
4:3 resolutions standard 320x240, HQ = 480x360
16:9 resolutions standard 320x180, HQ = 480x270
The 'upgrade' has actually resulted in lower quality, lower resolution
videos. This is especially obvious at standard resolution. There has
been no increase in bitrate.
Ermmm, ive just found out something thats not good...
The new widescreen "New Bigger, Better Video Player", why is it that
when we upload a widescreen video, its actually a smaller size than
the original 4:3 ratio videos we are used to uploading?
Example(talking about HQ here, not LQ although LQ its the same): I
upload a 640x480 video(size of the actual video players screen, 16:9
ratio) and it gets converted to a 480x270 video by youtube on HQ on LQ
is a measly 320x180.... now... when I upload a 480x360 video(not
widescreen), I get a 480x360 video in HQ and LQ is 320x240... so why
is widescreen smaller than the standard video size we usual upload?
I guess youtubes idea of widescreen is for you to simply cut of part
of the videos height to make its ratio 16:9 so you end up with a
smaller video than what you started with, YAY!!! ¬¬
So much for the "New Bigger, Better Video Player", it sure is big! but
the widescreen videos that go in it are smaller and of a lower quality
than ever!
So, upload your usual size videos for the best size and quality!
All you have to do is cope with the black bars at the sides.
Awsome job youtube!
Youve made life ever worse for us youtubers!
Please at least make widescreen videos BIGGER than than the standard
size videos, dont make them smaller like you have!!! (is that not why
you made the video player BIGGER, to make the videos BIGGER?!).
What are you thinking youtube?!!
I really hope you do read this because I want to know why youve
decided to make videos smaller and of a lower quality while at the
same time trying to introduce something that looks bigger, better and
more shiny.
Trojan Horse anyone?
I too would very much like to have the option to choose between 16:9
and 4:3, as the most videos I watch are in 4:3. I really hope that you
will make a function to let people choose as the viewing experience on
4:3 videos with the new format is decreased significantly. The black
bars are distracting and annoying and more annoying than the black
bars when you use "letterbox" to view 16:9 on a 4:3 television. You
could also let people choose in which aspect ratio their videos should
be uploaded in.
I like that you are offering higher quality, better quality as an
option is always a good thing
Problems:
Older videos look smaller even though they actually arent
I have videos with millions of views in the 16:9 aspect ratio and
would like to reupload them without losing stats
solution:
keep the old 4:3 player for older videos
allow me you upload a 2nd version of the same video and give people a
link to 'view in widescreen' the same way they can view in high
quality

16:9 is great and all, but when 80% of the videos are made with
Windows Movie Maker which has no widescreen option, then in 5 years
time we'll still have new videos with huge black margins.
Surely there's a way to auto-detect what size a file is before it
plays it, and switch accordingly.
The sad thing is that you should've thought of this in the first
place, and your staff seem to lack the ability to think before they do
things, so they get giddy and release things months before they should.
its a very good idea !! I hope it wont affect people with slower
connections like me(I dont think it did),
but when people start posting higher Resolution videos it will
definitely affect the time videos will take to load specially with us
who have a relatively slow connection, i hope Youtube will take that
into consideration.
also a suggestion is: why don't you add the "lights out" button on
every video ??

totally agree..
it's so ugly...
it hurts my eyes.... WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD PLAYER??

can't you guys give the option in Account, to change the size of the

I believe, like many others, that there should be an option on wether
to use this new player or not. On my 4:3 monitor, the widescreen
player makes the rest of the page look cluttered, and all 4:3 videos
have distracting black bars around them. I know 16:9 is becoming more
and more common, but we need an option to chose wether or not to view
the videos like that before a complete change.

so i test this widescreen crap out. i use a sony handycam dcr-hc48
with widescreen. I never recorded in widescreen before, but i thought
i'd give it a try. I record a video in widescreen...edit it in WMM
with the aspect changed to widescreen..then upload it. My problem is,
well i have the black bars still on the sides and not the top and
bottom like a true letterbox widescreen...so what's up?
THESE GUYS ARE DOING THIS SO YOU CAN MAKE IT MORE PROFESSIONAL SO THEY
CAN CUT DEALS WITH PRODUCERS LIKE FROM HOLLYWOOD!!!
HERE YOUTUBE IS JUST THINKING ABOUT THEMSELVES NOT THE USERS!!! THEY
JUST WANT THE MONEY!!!
IF THEY CARED ABOUT THE USERS THEY WOULDN'T'VE MADE THE WIDESCREEN OUT
UNTIL THEY GAVE US AN OPTION OF HOW TO USE IT THEY DIDN'T EVEN PUT
MUCH THOUGHT INTO IT JUST THINKING ABOUT THE MONEY!!!
what a stupid gimmick.. AND THEY DON'T EVEN WARN US OR GIVE US A BETA
VERSION SO WE CAN TRY IT OUT AND GIVE THEM FEEDBACK BEFORE HAND!!!
They just sprung it on us like they pretty much ALWAYS DO!!

This appears to be an ill conceived and poor executed idea. Whilst it
is appreciated that you are trying to improve the YT experience for
us, it would be nice if it was a majority decision that effected these
changes, rather than the pick of suggestions that the YT creators
would like to see themselves. Realistically, most of the YTubers out
there use a webcam to film their movie. Therefore the majority of
films are 4:3 in aspect.
For these changes to work, the person uploading the video should be
able to choose how they want their video to be seen, selecting the 4:3
ot 16:9 aspect. This option should then be noted by the video player
and the screen resizes accordingly.
Not many people can afford HD Widescreen video cameras yet and until
such time as they are readily available then a more flexible system
should have been used.
Now this arbitrary decision has left the majority of people with a
large black frame around their films, and even the people who have
filmed in widescreen already have also got weird screen displays.
Prior warning and information on the best screen sizes and resolutions
to be able to maximize our films like JonathanMarrero - did with his
film - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aLVCikhrSj8&fmt=18 (sorry this
was the first film I could find that worked well). Would have been
nice to know a few months ago, so we had prior warning and knew what
we needed to do make our widescreen films better.
Nice idea, badly executed with little information for those not
knowledgeable with filming in 16:9
This will benefit the few but inconvenience/annoy the majority.
The new resolution is 640 x 360, NOT 480x270. The quality of your 4:3
videos is the same, it is not mushed down or cut off. And, you have
wide screen! Enjoy it! A black border isn't then end of the world is
it? Did you not complain that there was a black border on 16:9 videos
on the old player?
YouTube shouldn't be such a large part of your life if it makes you
feel worse when they add a border or two. It isn't a big deal. All I
can see are postives about this :)

Excellent Idea. Youtube has been in desperate need of higher def
players. Problem is, now all my old videos look pretty terrible. The
ones that were 16:9 got converted to full screen, so they have this
big black box around them. And the full screen ones have an
unnecessarily large player....
