Thank you so much YouTube. I was looking for ways to watch videos on
YouTube in 16:9 for the last month. You guys know exactly when to
upgrade. First the high quality videos now the 16:9 aspect. Hulu won't
know what hit it when you guys start to get professional content. I
have to admit I like the competition Hulu is giving you guys because
it's causing you to step your game up. Keep it up YouTube.
Don't worry about the few people that are upset over this. They will
get used to it. In the future most of the videos will be made in 16:9.
Again thank you and keep up the good work.
I hate it.
It's hideous and huge and unnecessary.
You should provide a wide screen option when someone uploads so that
the people who want the wide screen on their videos they can have it.
There's no reason everyone should have to have this ugly thing when
most of us don't even have wide screen videos.
I think the change is great, but it can't stay like this!
16:9 videos uploaded in the 4:3 format have bars on all 4 sides. To
eliminate this problem, Youtube should allow cropping for videos after
the upload to eliminate this problem. Cropping can really help a LOT
of issues that this site has. It might take a toll on the servers, but
after annotations and High Quality playback, I can't believe simple
cropping wasn't on the top of the to-do list. Even before the 16:9
player, some videos automatically add a border.
Also, I'd like the option to upload different versions of a video. if
it doesn't get abused (like serverely changing the content), it would
be great for fixing videos during changes like this.
Please... for the love of god. MAKE THIS AN OPTION!
I understand that they increase quality, and it looks pretty neat on
videos with the new resolution, but all the other normal videos that
used to look ok now look like crap. Very annoying crap at that, if you
include the black bars. Now, this is a great idea, but you really NEED
to make this optional. I've been using YouTube for quite a long time
now, and personally... I just want my old youtube screen back.

This new change, while it may be ok for some, completely destroys
youtube for everyone else.
i thought it was a bug or a glitch at first, and when i found out it
was intentional i almost quit right there.
seriously, it sucks if you don't need it, and most of us don't need
it. put a little selector box or ratio menue (like the favorite, or
share menues below the vids) and give the option there, but keep all
videos in the original ratio until a user changes the mode.

"A black border isn't then end of the world is it?"
No its not, but a double letterbox still looks a little ridiculous,
and its something they have the power to modify and improve so why not
let them know about it? I'm all for widescreen, most of my videos are
widescreen and this is going to be awesome once I upload new content.
But putting in an uploader-set option to display in 4:3 isn't asking
for all that much.
Another problem I've run into... double letterboxed videos don't fill
the whole screen when they are full-screened anymore. Doens't bother
me so much as I never thought youtube was good enough picture quality
to watch in full screen, but yeah.
OR... an option to re-upload my double letterboxes with proper
widescreen versions into the existing pages - without losing all the
views / comments / etc. That would be just awesome, but I spose there
could be problems with that method where people upload different
content in there.

I think this is a big step forward to make youtube better, but also a
step back. I have only seen a few 16:9 videos on youtube, and i
personally like making my videos in 4:3 because i feel that keeping it
in 4:3 makes people pay more attention to what is happening than the
surroundings. its more confined. And the letterboxes on 4:3 videos not
only are unappealing, but annoying and distracting. I believe that
this new widescreen player should be an option, like the HQ video
option, to automatically go into the 16:9 player when that aspect
ratio is available in a video. If that is added to youtube, i know i
would be happy and i think so will alot of other people. Thank You
One thing is missing from the new Widescreen YouTube player>>
The embedded videos are still using the NON-widescreen player. YouTube
should make the Widescreen player available to embedded videos too.
Also when people upload a video it says this:
"About Uploading
Upload up to 10 videos at a time
Any video format
Up to 1 GB in size. "
You should ADD "Widescreen 16:9 or 4:3"
You should also create a help category called "widescreen videos" and
tell people to choose the widescreen option on their digital camera or
video camera so the video will fill the whole YouTube player and you
won't get black bars on the sides.
Also the new Widescreen player is still in 4:3 mode when viewing a
user's profile where they have a video blog on their main profile
page. Have a look here:

HEY NO NO! ..don't go giving them any more stupid ideas! If embedded
players were widescreen, that would SCREW UP WEBSITES! for instance..
it would not fit in myspace columns, therefore making them unable to
be put on myspace pages or it would stretch out the page and make it
go off the screen! I would be pissed off big time if that happened!

WTF do you like looking at screwed up and cluttered pages or
something? If they did that I wouldn't even have a feature vid! that
would really screw up a channel and could make it go off the screen! I
don't even like the widescreen to begin with and you want them to F it
up more?!

Most of my videos are 16:9, uploaded letterboxed to 4:3. Ideally,
there should be two new options on our "edit video" page:
1. "Video is widescreen" - checkbox setting this will cut off the top/
bottom of the screen and stretch it to be 16:9 (or 16:10), to prevent
double letterboxing. This option is really essential, and really
shouldn't be too hard to implement.
2. "Upload widescreen version" - to upload a widescreen version of the
video to be used when played on the widescreen player. Would be very
nice to have.
At the very minimum, the first option should be added ASAP so we don't
have double letterboxing.

Timmy,
I'm not sure what the deal is, but something isn't right with the way
you are doing this new format. I have my videos on many other video
sharing sites and they look way better on those sites at this new size
than they do on YouTube. Furthermore, the videos, in both formats
(standard and high) are slower loading than before. It appears to me
as though you have taken videos (at least mine---and I have over 160
of them uploaded), and instead of re-encoding them at the larger size,
you simply up-rezzed them to the new size. There is a huge loss of
quality, even though I originally uploaded them at the 640 X 360
size.
It also looks like you aren't using the latest version Flash 9, which
has the H.264 codec, but, I don't know that for sure. If you're going
to go through all this trouble and try to compete with the other web
sites out there, best to get with the program and use the latest H.264
Flash 9 player/encoder.
What I do know is that prior to this new size, my "high-quality"
videos looked great on YouTube, and now they don't (BUT, they should,
considering good they look on other sites at this new size). If it
is, in fact, due to up-rezzing the converted files to the new size,
instead of re-encoding the files to the new size, then I'm not pleased
at all. In other words, when I upload my 640 X 360 HD files, they
were reduced to your older player size before being streamed. If all
you did was take THAT video and make it bigger, rather than going back
to the original file that I uploaded and re-encoding it, truly, what's
the point of that???
That's what it looks like to me. I''ll run a test in a few days to
see if, in fact, that;'s the case (as I'm hoping you have reset your
conversions to the new size).

I don't like the thick black bands at the edges of this new
widescreen. It makes the characters in some of the videos look
smaller. If you can't go back to the previous size, can you at least
make the bands the same white as the page, and either hide the black
border line or make it a more subdued "light grey" or something
similar.

This sucks. I don't have a fast, up to date computer. Before this new
widescreen switch, I could only watch videos with the option to shrink
the video down in it's window. But when they took that away, I could
no longer watch any videos. They skipped really badly. Now, the
problem is even worse. They play part of the way through then start
over. When will youtube realize that not every one has a new computer,
and that most of us have computers that are several years old and
can't run a lot of the newest quality videos.

The 6+ year old Gateway laptops at my school can watch fullscreen
YouTube videos fine. Your computer is either massively overloaded with
programs, broken, or *really* old.

Some videos are in 16:9 aspect ratio but uploaded in 4:3 ratio + the
top and bottom borders as part of the videos, perhaps can include some
options to override the aspect ratio?

I can't believe this got approved. All this time in development? It
had to go through in house testing... didn't it? And you guys didn't
see the eye fatigue it causes the way this is now displayed? You guys
are causing yourself so many more problems rather than good, solid,
tested, viable solutions to your areas of growth. Whomever approved
all of this (I bet) is the same guy that generated the idea of YouTube
Live and approved it as well.

hello
I was wondering if you could make the widescreen player an optional
choice when uploading a video or even remove it because it makes the
quality worse than the smaller player and leaves big gaps on the
sides.

I love it, but I would REALLY like the ability to re-upload my videos
in a widescreen format as the same video ID. I have widescreen
versions of pretty much everything but didn't upload as the player was
4:3.
Other thing... I would absolutely positively LOVE the ability to
upload full-length videos. I'm gearing up for a web talk show and
being able to archive it on here with ads (and commercial breaks to be
filled when inventory is sold placed similarly to how annotations are
placed) would be fantastic.
Basically, these are the only two features I really need out of
YouTube and I basically can do everything I want to with it. So kudos
go to you guys.
