Over the years we've heard a lot of feedback from you about what you'd
like to change about YouTube, and the size of our video player is
always top of mind. That's why today we're excited to announce a
bigger YouTube player.
We're expanding the width of the page to 960 pixels to better reflect
the quality of the videos you create and the screens that you use to
watch them. This new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio
which we hope will provide you with a cleaner, more powerful viewing
experience. And don't worry, your 4:3 aspect ratio videos will play
just fine in this new player.
As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to share your
thoughts with us on this exciting, new change happening for all videos
on YouTube.

Here's a better idea.. if the video is 4:3 aspect HAVE IT PLAY IN THE
NORMAL SIZED PLAYER!!! and ONLY have it play widescreen IF THE VIDEO
IS WIDESCREEN!!! OTHERWISE GIVE US THE OPTION OF WHAT WE WANT TO
USE!!!!! maybe make a link on each video so we can change it manually
like the quality, and give us the option of setting a default! But as
it is now I DO NOT LIKE IT AT ALL!!!

What you need to do is to somehow analyze the upload and have 3
different display modes; 4:3, 16:10 and 16:9
And have the youtube page(s) display the video size depending on the
aspect ratio.
It's easy to do and it will make it not look ugly in 90% of all
videos :P
While we're on the subject, I really really do hope you guys keep high
def. streaming support for all apsect ratios and allow embedding, if
you do this- us gamers will have our new home here on youtube.
We have been looking for a new home ever since stage6 shut down, most
other video stream websites reject us (vimeo, exposureroom, et.c.) and
bans video game videos...
If you guys keep high def streaming/embedding and allow video games
you will make the entire video game community such a huge favor that
it's hard to say in words.
Please do everything you can to keep this a reality (maybe add short
5sec advertisements (that explains "video will begin in Xseconds"
clearly) at the start of the video if you're embedding high def. video
to make up some of the bandwidth money)
I don't like it. I don't have a wide screen, so everything looks very
cramped and claustrophobic. Maybe you see quality, but I see clutter.
Can we have the option to view videos like we did before?
We, in all honesty, need an option to be able to use the new feature
or not. Either that, or older 4:3 videos need to have the option to be
changed back to the original 4:3 ratio for an optimum viewing
experience.
I have no problem with 16:9, and I'll probably upload all my videos in
a HQ 16:9 format, but I'd still like for my old videos to have good
quality on them when viewed.

Ok I just found a problem.. I went to watch a widescreen vid.. well
guess what IT WAS SUPER WIDESCREEN!! THE VIDEO FRICKEN STRETCHED WAY
OUT!! It had the black bars on the top and bottom! so ya.. either let
us chose or scrap this dumb idea! I'm sick and tired of all the stupid
changes you guys are doing too.. like getting rid of who's vids they
are when in the favorites, number of ratings, number of videos someone
has from description, CHANGING THE THUMBNAILS to Widescreen so it CUTS
OFF part of it.. I could go on and on about all the stupid pointless
changes that have been done to make it harder and more confusing for
us to use and you guys redo things all the time it gets VERY
ANNOYING!! Some things are good but many are pathetic! OH AND GETTING
RID OF THE OPTION TO USE PHOTOS FROM ONLINE STORAGE SITES LIKE
PHOTOBUCKET FOR BACKGROUND IMAGES!!! WHAT WAS THE STUPID REASON BEHIND
THAT?! And the SIZE LIMIT on that is RIDICULOUSLY SMALL!!!
How about you guys like make the featured vids and embedded vids be
able to play in high quality! that would be a nice change..

Hi,
I just been very bad surprised, as from today all my 4:3 videos
appeared in 16:9.
They look really shit, with the huge black borders.
Please give the video owner the possibility in the channel to be able
to make a choice for the player ratio with a drop down list (16:9 or
4:3), or make possible using the custom player in youtube too.
Hoping for a quickly solution! Please let me know...
sincerely

I want a choice on what I want and a lot of people do I like youtube
but with out a choice of which I want I am strongly thinking about
quiting youtube and movie over to another site give us a choice let us
choose what we want for our videos or have the uploader choose which
one from the ratio is I just wanna view my old videos normally and yes
I will upload to the new format I just wish my old videos could be
enjoyed in the former gloary as apposed to something less then they
were and are
i like it and was thinking about it but i think you should have an
option or an auto feature that allows uploader of video or youtube to
auto scan video to find if its widescreen or not becuse it looks bad
with black bars all over sometimes
Also i think its not to wide but not tall enough it looks weird and
bad. I think you should increase height(up and down) a little
Awsome love upgrade cant wait for HD currnetly use Vimeo for that

I'm not a big fan of this. Mainly because 99% of my videos are 16:9,
and yet are still letterboxing. What would be great is if we got to
choose more options in the upload process. Like wheather or not we
wanted that video to play in the widescreen player, or if we wanted
the video to automatically crop or zoom into the full player (like on
the iPhone/iPod touch,) etc.
Another thing is that the YouTube pages look really awkward. If
anything, make the modules on the right of the page a little wider. It
looks very weird with the left really wide and the right very narrow.
Also, with the new page style, try applying it to every page. It's not
consise and is kind of strange.

I am a longtime Youtuber, but I have never posted my reactions on any
feature due to me overall liking them.
I like the new Widescreen setup as well, but like many users I too
have the problem of the new feature cramping and cluttering the rest
of the page, and it makes it frustrating, at least for me.
Is there any way to implement an option to choose whether or not to
use the Widescreen feature? I would love to have something like that.
This is great. Most of my videos are HD, but I've uploaded them in
letterboxed form to prevent any sizing anomalies. Please consider some
way of allowing users to *replace their previously posted videos* with
16x9 versions of the same, so that links and ratings are not
invalidated, and we don't have to watch our videos windowboxed!
Make it so the person uploading the video can decide if they want
their player to be widescreen or fullscreen. And don't leave it up so
the user to decide because then they'll have to constantly be
switching their settings back and forward if the black bars bug them
as much as they bug me.

I like the idea of a Widescreen player, but I think this one is just a
bit too big. Also, I uploaded some videos in 16:9 ratio a while back,
but they appear to have been converted to 4:3. And then there some
videos that I filmed in 16:9 that I converted to 4:3 myself, because
it wasn't 'supported' back then. This results in those videos having a
huge black border completely around them.
I agree, however it is good yes, I like the new player, but perhaps
the option to have it set for say under account settings perhaps have
a setting saying "widescreen player on/off" then if say off is picked,
it would show the classic youtube player at its old (normal) size,
then if on is picked then the new wider player would be selected as
per account use? I too find the black bars annoying, and makes the vid
itself seems really small.
Please make this optional, because not all the videos are fullscreen
and they have the ugly black strips which distracts the viewers. Bring
back the old video player or at-least make this optional!
I've got a question for ya. what the heck were you thinking making it
wider? that was really stupid. I agree with Shane1163 when he says
it's "GET RID OF THAT SH**!!!!!" How am I supose to enjoy the vid's if
they are too wide like they are now. All I'm gonna say is quoting what
Shane1163
EITHER GET RID OF THAT SH** OR MAKE IT OPTIONAL I HATE WATCHING VID'S
LIKE THAT I CAN'T EVEN ENJOY THEM LIKE THAT. SO I HOPE THAT FOR THE
SAKE OF EVERYONE THAT LIKES IT THE OLD WAY THAT YOU CHANGE IT BACK AS
FAST AS POSIBLE.

What you really need (and honestly, you've needed this for a while) is
a ratio-change button. Click it, and it toggles amongst 16x9, 4x3, and
zoomed 16x9 modes (for hard-matted clips).
Another thing that bothers me about the newer player (meaning, the one
that has been around for a few months) is that now you can't
immediately pause a video to allow it to buffer a bit before playing.
Instead you have to wait for it to start playing, then pause. To
further the annoyance, some videos won't easily rewind to the start.
Every time you try to drag the slider to the left, it will hop to the
right several seconds and begin to play again.
Basically, the Youtube player has become a lot less usable over the
last several months, and although the new features are nice in and of
themselves, they don't fix anything.

The idea is good, but there is a significant problem I've found.
When I'm making a video for youtube, rather than stupidly stretching
my 16:9 videos to fill a 4:3 space, I rendered them out as 4:3
letterboxed, with black bars at the top and bottom. Worked fine.
Now that this is widescreen by default, it means that these videos are
letterboxed on the sides as well as the top/bottom one I put there
before. So there is a tiny video in the middle of a sea of black
space. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have this problem.
Having an option would be the best idea for sure. I would rather have
these videos displayed at 4:3 (with my own letterboxing still there),
and then have an option to choose "display as widescreen" or
something. If this widescreen thing hangs around then I wont bother
letterboxing my new widescreen videos and let them fill the whole
space, but as it is it looks a little ridiculous. Especially as most
videos aren't widescreen.
My screen is widescreen so the page layout looks great, its just not
as functional as it could be.
Hopefully this post stands out in amongst the retarded "LOLLL OMGG!!!
DIs 1zzz SHee33it~!!!111"posts. :)
