As far as I recall, the ads are generally targeted to specific
audiences based on interest in the topic. For example, if you watch a
number of videos about a certain topic, those types of ads may appear.
This would ultimately be determined by the keywords that the uploaders
choose and sometimes they put words like 'sex, naked, gay' so thier
videos get listed in various searches - so it does not always work as
intended. I believe the keywords for the video you are watching also
determine what types of advertisements are shown in that particular
video.
It is technically possible to block all ads on YouTube including in-
video advertisements (up until April 16) using a browser plug-in/
extension. However doing so means you would not be supporting the site
financially and that would not be very nice of you.
If you believe the advertisement was inappropriate for the site, you
can try reporting it to Google/YouTube.
