We're happy to announce a couple of new changes to your YouTube
channels, based on the feedback and suggestions you've given to us.
The first is the creation of a "Recent Activity" box on your YouTube
channel. This box will provide your viewers with a snapshot of recent
changes you've made to your public channel, making your channel more
dynamic, fresh and timely. For example, if you recently added a new
favorite to your channel, visitors can find this favorite in the new
Recent Activity box (as well as in the usual "Favorites" box). The
Recent Activity box will also consolidate the separate "My Recent
Ratings" and "My Recent Comments" boxes into this single activity
window.
And now, the Recent Activity privacy settings page:
http://www.youtube.com/account#privacy/activity (also available in the
upper-right corner of the Recent Activity box) lets you choose what
activity you want to appear in the Recent Activity box.
It's important to note that we've set your initial Recent Activity
settings according to what you already publicly show on your channel
today - so, for example, if you're not already showing the Favorites
box on your channel, then the Recent Activity box won't suddenly start
showing new favorites you make.
Regarding bulletins, we've listened to you, and most of you didn't see
the value in bulletins as they are today. So, we're taking a first
step to make bulletins more useful. Although the bulletin box will be
going away, now you can broadcast a bulletin directly to your channel
visitors in your Recent Activity box. This not only provides a fun
place to shout out personal updates and news, but also provides an
additional way to communicate and engage with your channel's fans.
We hope you like these changes, and are always eager to hear your
feedback - so please feel free to share your thoughts with us!
I like to have other users see what I'm watching, however I don't like
them to see my comments as they sound stupid out of context. Please
let us have the option of choosing what we want people to see on our
profile page, rather than condensing it into one big mess.

By the way, there is a small bug in the Recent Activity Box. When I
unchecked everything it said:
"You haven't done anything on YouTube yet. When you start uploading,
favoriting, commenting, and performing other actions on YouTube, your
activity will show up here. For more info and to manage your privacy
settings, click here."
That's complete nonsense of course. I think when someone unchecks
everything, the box should automatically disappear (auto-uncheck from
Channel Design) or at least give a proper message.
BLAH! You guys can never leave well enough alone can you? Always gotta
be messing around and screwing everything up and changing things on us
to make it confusing for us!! DON'T get ird of how long ago a video
was added like you did! DON'T make thumbnails smaller like you did!
jeez just stop it's so annoying!!!

Panman38, you DO have that option... but your comments aren't even
supposed to appear in that box unless you chose to have them on in the
first place.
(below is copied from my comment on the YouTube blog entry)
I actually like the new feature... it saves space (as compared to
having the recent comments and ratings as separate modules), and we
can post small bulletins in it. I realize that the old bulletin box
had it's flaws, but it was a useful way to announce things to other
users. Maybe if there was a way to turn the new module into a 'Twitter-
ish' module that we could embed to other sites?
I miss the bulletin box, and going to a certain persons page to see if
they posted one is annoying. PLEASE bring back the bulletin feature,
and if you can, make it opitional one someones page.
Thanks.

Timmy, I REALLY hope you have some way of accessing the information
lost when you removed the bulletin system. I had extremely vital
information stored in there. Please allow us some way to retrieve
that data!
I am sorry, but I don't like the changes. It's too messy. I don't like
the new design of your homepage either; it's dull and boring and it
feels like we're going back in time. It worked just fine the way it
was! In my opinion you did too much changes at the same time.

Any YouTube staff members reading this post need to look at the
December 3rd 'Broadcasting Ourself' blog about this topic. The
overwhelming majority of people want their bulletins back. In fact,
it's a near-unanimous sentiment. Additionally, some very serious
issues about privacy have been raised about the 'Recent Activities'
box which need to be addressed. You say you're giving us more control
over our channel when, in fact, the opposite is true. There's a very
clear message that people want you to fix problems before making
changes to features that WEREN'T BROKEN TO BEGIN WITH. They also want
you to fix new problems that've come about because of the changes.
Better yet, they just want things back the way they were. You may be
happy to announce these changes but nobody else appears happy to hear
them. If you truly do listen to feedback then pay attention, remove
the changes and restore YouTube back to the way it was ASAP.
Please.
Please fix the Playlist logos box...i have worked so hard to have it
perfect then overnight it looks terrible with a big black band at the
bottom of each one...why this was tampered with i dont know...it has
really deeply annoyed me i swear i cant tell you how it has effected
my mindset...my front page now looks a shambles with the stupid logos
box altered
...please please put the old one back so our playlist logos look
correct...

Why ask for feedback after claiming you've 'listened' to us in the
first place...if you need feedback, then who did you hear?
I didn't find my own bulletins useful, but it had some use.
Is there some way to see recent bulletins from subscriptions (or
friends) in one location?
Can links in our own bulletins be hyperlinked instead of plain text?
It would be nice to pick the order of channel elements.
you know.. I think it's pretty stupid how you say "We're happy to
announce... blah blah blah" I THINK what you mean and what you SHOULD
be writing.. is "We regret to inform you that..."!
Are you guys blind? you guys make all these stupid changes and people
complain about it and you STILL go and make stupid changes! People
don't like what you're doing!
Just can't get anything through your heads can we?
Just a bunch of monkeys working at youtube I guess!

This is ridiculous, why are you always screwing youtube up? The
bulletins were only useless for people who whored themselves out,
making friends with and subscribing to as many people as they could. I
used them with my close circle of friends to know when someone
uploaded a video, everything I needed was on my channel page. Give
back the bulletins and stop screwing with something thats not broken.
First the widescreen and now this junk...
My opinion about the recent activities box is that it has so much
unneeded repetitive info... for example:
For every activity it begins CHANNELNAME has uploaded...
channelname has favorited:
channelname has rated:
etc.
Way too much information NOBODY actually needs. I am already on that
channel, why do i need the name over and over again?
Second, the beauty of having a 'recently rated' box is it gave viewers
a little insight into who the person/artist is (beyond their videos)
without telling every little thing a person does. The comments and
ratings were nice when they were separated, a person could choose both
or neither. Now - one box - all mucked up with a bunch of unnecessary
wording.
Lastly, in general - the changes made - including videos and
favorites box layout changes, the new "stars" with the nasty white
outline and less vibrant red, the time display on top of the already
small thumbnail, etc.. none of these changes really give us any more
information while at the same time using more screen space and losing
the aesthetically pleasing, artistic character of what used to be
rather reductionist.
IN OTHER WORDS you have taken something that had been rather simple
and neat and complicated it without adding any new information and at
the same time made it rather unpleasing to the eye.
not only everything you said voemz.. but they REMOVED how long ago the
videos were added!! They also took away the number of comments on a
video when looking under "most discussed" a while back! gay.. they go
and take stuff away making smaller thumbnails make it look ugly.. and
it was fine the way it was before! I liked how it was a LONG time ago!
I think these monkeys need some training!

You should give the option for us to choose between the old design and
the new one. - To also decline into wanting any options like these
over any of the older options that were in place, seeing as so many
people are disliking the changes made. I myself, am not seeing myself
finding this change too different, however I've succumbed to the new
design of the site yet, as I did in fact like the old one better.
Though I guess it's something we will have to get used to.
I think it's obvious the updates failed once again. =(
What might work is watching it from a Tubers point of view instead of
from some kind of "God"-like perspective.
So far there are 5 priorities and 5 optional things that need to be
changed!! Do something about it! Please!!

Well, Timmy, let's just say that when I learned of the changes last
night and refreshed my channel page, I was HORRIFIED. I'd had such
things disabled from their first introduction, considering them a
total invasion of my privacy, and suddenly they were all back, with
still more, all packaged in a lovely box. I spent the next 15 minutes
finding where YouTube had hidden the means to disable it all. You say
that "we" are suggesting these hideous things. Just who the heck are
"we"? It certainly isn't anyone I know...
And while you were at it, you once again removed the date posted from
ALL videos, in our own video lists, our favorites, everyone else's
videos and favorites, and on our subscription pages as well. This is
EXTREMELY USEFUL FUNCTIONALITY that you removed once before, and we
had to battle to get it restored again. Can you please restore it
again? And leave it alone this time?

Yes.. Timmy and team, and I am truly sorry my original post seems so
direct, possibly negative because it is not meant as personal
criticism. Obviously everyone has put a great deal of effort into
making changes.
And users such as ourselves have not studied every permutation of the
new offereings.
For instance, I like the "recently uploaded video" announcement. That
makes perfect sense; instantly identify new content.
Great. But why change the over-all aesthetic simply to add that
option? Why not add another box. Another choice.
I know you think the multiple choice in recent activity gives us the
same thing, but it does not. It gives us a hodge-podge in a box as
opposed to separate modules which we can opt into while keeping a
clean channel design.

Oh my god. No! Don't take away our bulletins! I love bulletins! Its a
great way to communicate with all of your friends very easily but
now...its just ruined. It felt like a lovely and friendly community
before with the bulletins but now it doesn't, it just feels like
everyones independent. All my friends feel the same way. Please give
us the option of bulletins again. And I dont like recent activity, NO
PRIVACY! Well Im here, I might as well moan about the other stuff you
have changed. WIDESCREEN! HATE IT! HATE IT! HATE IT! Have to scroll
down so much to see the full description and for those of us who cant
make widescreen videos, they look rubbish. Please give us the option
of watching in widescreen or not like watching in hq or not. Also,
please bring back the scroller on the favorites. Please, just change
stuff back. When I joined youtube in september 2007, it was amazing
and now it is just getting terrible. Why do you have to make updates
when things are already good. I learnt to put up with you making
updates but now with widescreen and bulletins, I might as well just
leave youtube and I am thinking well about it

now I can only write one line.
I'd like to be able to still write long messages as bulletins...
