Hey guys - lots of good feedback and comments on this thread. Some
individual responses:

Yes, that's a minor bug - we need to distinguish between "you haven't
done anything" and "you've done stuff, but your Recent Activity box
isn't configured to show those things right now."

You do have that option - you can add or remove any module from your
channel page as you see fit (including Recent Activity) - just click
on "Edit my channel" and then "Channel design" to add/remove modules.
You can also control exactly what appears in the Recent Activity box
by either deleting individual items, or by hitting the "privacy
settings" link in the upper right and enabling/disabling each type of
action (uploads, favorites, etc).

That was our bad. Completely unintentional. We know the "date added"
is a very useful field on channels. We'll restore that soon.

The bulletins feature as it previously existed won't be returning, but
the new bulletin feature will be changing over time. We know there are
users that really liked the old bulletin system, but it had a lot of
problems and we needed to change it to a different system. One
complaint we've heard with the new system is that it's harder to get
your friends to read your bulletin now. That's something we'd like to
solve. Stay tuned.

Yes, that's another bug we have on our to-do list. Thanks for pointing
it out.
Thanks for your feedback, everyone. Good or bad, it's great being able
to get your feedback.

YouTube BrianG, thanks for responding to us. Could you, or any other
person with an ID starting with YouTube please go back in this thread
and find my message posted on Dec. 4, 2008, 7:00 p.m. (may show up as
4:00 p.m. if you're in the Pacific Time Zone and displaying the time
for that zone) and share your thoughts about the other things I
mentioned? The item mentioned by Shane1163 shown below is one that I
mentioned, too, and I'm glad to see you will restore it soon. It can't
be soon enough for me!
I didn't use the Bulletins feature, and I think the list of recent
activity is pretty good (although I feared that it was meant to
replace the display of the "date added" information; now that I know
it's not, I appreciate it). The only thing I don't care for is the
simple sentence, "rslitman is watching a video." Duh. That's why I'm
here! And yet, I didn't see a way to delete this line from the
display.
Thus, the one thing I didn't like about the most recent change was the
removal of the date added, and since you say you'll be bringing it
back, that's fine with me. I feel bad for the people who didn't like
the removal of bulletins.
I honestly hate it. I like the old bullitens box a lot more.
I think we should have a choice to have the old bullitens or this new
crap. Sorry if I sound rude, but I honestly hate it.

Hi, I personally do not like the changes that have been made.
The bulletin board was much more useful, also i don't like the fact
people can see what I have been watching. But with out this you
are unable to receive comments.

Hell, I think the ideas used for bulletins now is poor. The original
format ran very well for a long time.
"Yadda has become friends with Blah." Whoopedy-damn-doo. People can
see that in my friends list.
"User favorited [video]" The favorites section isn't good enough?
Again, IF IT'S NOT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT! For now, it's broken, and bad
to use.
> We're happy to announce a couple of new changes...
While the YouTube community awaits the reversal of your decision to
drop the old bulletins format and replace it with the 'recent
activity' box, it would be very much appreciated if you could restore
the 'my recent ratings' box as a gesture of good faith. Partners
inexplicably enjoy that privilege, why shouldn't the rest of us? Yes,
I know it's been packaged into the recent activities box which, by the
way, partners do not appear to be subjected to. However, if/when the
much-despised activities box is abandoned, after you realize it will
never properly replace bulletins, I'd hate to lose this feature
altogether.

Ok..one little suggestion from me..where we can organized our top 9
videos..why not let it be soo we can change our featured video or last
uploaded video?? just add it on top of the 9 by itself..and just make
it possible.."Spotlight"..if it can be done and i don't know about
it..I don't know..but i'd like to see that happening..The rest is next
to perfect! keep up the good work over there..and one last thing..CAN
i PLEASE get more views on my channel..:) ty.

Umm to be able to change the last uploaded video..the brains over
there must be thinking of this..but..if you could get a way to add
alongside the "add" then next to it "featured" or as i say "Spotlight"
on all the videos..just thought about it and wanted to say it aloud or
whatever..i'll take my payment in more circulations of my vids..thank
you!:D

Please disable the Recent activity box (also unticked details) as
DEFAULT. Like how it was before. Then people can choose whether or not
they want to enable the box.
A bit offtopic, is there anyway for YouTube to edit Video upload
(replace the video file - like updating it, but still keep the same
URL?).
You guys do upgrades on this site thinking that you made it better!
Well to tell you the truth.... SOME OF THEM ARE TERRIBLE! Just bring
back the bulletins and leave it like that!
Hi
I preferred seeing recent ratings to recent activity, youtube for me
is more about watching video and sharing recommendations than social
networking. It's pretty dull to see a list of who's friends with who
on youtube, which is more of a facebook thing, where you get an
insight into people. Comments might be interesting, haven't seen much
of that yet.
I really miss the bulletin box. It was full of spam much of the time,
but stuff I'm not interested in was easily ignored. I have no way of
actively and quickly communicating with my friend network. It had a
function which is now lost.

Im very against the no bulletin thing, the bulletins helped us see
whats goin on on other channels w/o us actually bein there. And
besides, i cant remember everybody's usernames (that i havent
subscribed to)
ALSO! Yall should give us a better warning on how close we are from
gettin suspended. I always see "Good standing" on my account when in
reality i got at least one video deleted. That will help SOOOOOOOOOO
much! Everybody'll love u for it. And at least give us a timed warning
to delete the specific video b4 suspendin us versus deletin us
abruptly.
I don't like this new feature, I'm sorry. If feels like I'm cut off
from everyone. I miss everyone telling me what happened to them that
day. And I miss telling everyone what happened in my day. You don't
have to bring back the old bulletins. Just bring back the feature of
being able to broadcast a message to all your contacts. And being able
to read other peoples. Like the old bulletins.
Please think about it. I feel really lonely here now. It isn't half as
much fun anymore. And I would be considering leaving if I didn't love
making videos so much.
Its really not enjoyable anymore.
I notice that my history only showed those videos I took for the
Recent Activity Test Spin. Will I run into this (cleared history) as a
standard since I use my History feature alot. I don't like to clog up
the favorites or subscribe "on-the-fly" when I run into a awesome
channel.

As some people have noted, the "new" bulletin system no longer
syndicates your bulletins out to your friends. We're already in the
process of rolling out our next update to the bulletin system that
will change this - your bulletins will now start to show up on your
friends' homepages in their "Friend Activity" box.
We hope this addresses many of your concerns about the new version of
the bulletins feature.

-- If this is the case, and I see it wasn't part of the 'routine
maintenance' done last night (December 10th), then I will call this
what it is...a consolation prize. This announcement shows someone WAS
paying attention to the throngs of people who asked, yelled, pleaded,
demanded and even threatened YouTube when the old bulletin system was
removed without warning. If this comes to fruition, it's a victory in
the battle to ensure YouTube really is about 'you', meaning us. For
that, we can be at least somewhat thankful.
However, it's a qualified victory, one whose full breadth is still not
yet known. What is apparent is that it's not exactly what people
wanted, which was a return to the old bulletin system. In a previous
posting, I suggested that no matter what YouTube did with the 'Recent
Activities' box, people would never be completely satisfied. I'm not
yet prepared to back away from that statement, even if this
announcement takes a major step towards remedying the situation. The
demand for the return of the old system isn't just going to disappear
anytime soon and if this change is sloppily done, it'll only serve to
further anger the YouTube community.
Allowing the bulletin function in the 'Recent Activities' box to reach
all YouTube friends will restore a major loss, but it needs to be done
right. It's also not the only step that needs to be taken. To be
done right, the current limit on the length of 'bulletins' one can
post to one's own YT page, through the 'Recent Activities' box, must
be increased. It must have no restrictions on what can be included,
meaning URLs and websites must be allowed. This was the case with the
old bulletins system but is not the case with comments. It also needs
to allow for at least a paragraph-sized box to open so that we can see
what we are typing better than we can with the single-line box that is
currently used. Oh, and bulletins ACTUALLY HAVE TO STAY UP. The one
I wrote this morning has mysteriously vanished from my 'Recent
Activities' box. Let's just say this is counter-productive.
I would also like to suggest that the 'Recent Activities' box actually
be transformed solely into the new bulletins option. A restoration of
the separate 'My Recent Comments' box and 'My Recent Ratings' box
should eliminate the need for the 'Recent Activities' box to be used
for anything other than bulletins. If partners can have this luxury
(and some do), there's no reason the rest of us can't. I don't see
that there's a particular advantage to this design that merits it be
restricted to preferred members. It'd also show that YouTube tacitly
acknowledges it vastly underappreciated just how angry people were to
the changes it initiated that led to the near-unprecedented backlash
that has come about.
Now, until any changes do happen, this announcement is just that..an
announcement. I hope YouTube has been convinced to give the
restoration of a proper bulletin system a high priority and that we
see concrete changes sooner, rather than later.
Well, it appears I may have misspoke about what YouTube has decided.
From what I thought I read, we'd be getting the bulletins in the
'Recent Activity' box. What is actually happening is that the
bulletins are appearing on our home page in the 'Friends Activities'
box, as was noted in the original post I was answering. This would
appear to negate some of what I said. The decision still remains a
consolation prize as it is a below-par substitute for the old system.
I'll reserve judgement on this new system until I get a better feels
for how well it works and how often I actually see these
announcements. That having been said, I'm still of the opinion we
should be able to get at least a choice as to whether we want the 'My
Recent Comments' and 'My Recent Ratings' boxes back instead of
everything appearing in the 'Recent Activity' box.
BTW, the bulletin that I wrote earlier today that disappeared has now
reappared.

friend's name, i didn't get it.... that's wrong! Friendship has both
one by one relationship and gang relationship, they cut the last one
off.
