Subject: Feedback on New Video Upload Redesign Beta
Hey all,

We just released the beta version of our new and improved video
uploader. If you want to check it out, just login to your YouTube
account and click this link to opt in: http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_upload?beta

The new video upload flow includes these cool features:

    • You can enter in your video's metadata (title, description,
tags, etc.) while the upload is processing.

    • Upload multiple files at once, without downloading a plugin
(separate progress bars will display for each file).

    • The file-size limit for uploads has been raised from 100MB to
1GB.

Let us know what you think of the new uploader by replying to this
post.

Thanks!
YouTube Timmy

Subject: Re: Feedback on New Video Upload Redesign Beta
My feedback for the new video uploader:

It is missing these features that the NON Beta uploader has:

Date and Map Options

Sharing Options:
Comments -Allow comments to be added automatically ETC ETC
 Embedding
 Syndication
 Video Responses
 Comment Voting

It is also missing the QUICK CAPTURE button that lets people record
directly from their webcam.

Also, after users upload their video, underneath the SAVE CHANGES
button, it has a box that says "Add a file to start uploading". I know
this is for users to upload ANOTHER video, but alot of people will be
confused about this because they may think their first video has not
been uploaded. So to not confuse people you should move the SECOND,
THIRD,FORTH, and TENTH "Add a file to start uploading" box to
UNDERNEATH the FIRST "Add a file to start uploading" box, instead of
underneath the SAVE CHANGES button.

It should also have a LANGUAGE option so users can select the language
of the video they are uploading. eg: English,French,Dutch etc etc. The
default language would be English.

Users should also be able to upload Photos in the formats of
JPEG,BMP,TIFF, etc. Once the Photos are uploaded they should be
converted into a video file and put into a slideshow. There should be
an option for Users to be able to choose some Slide visual effects and
slide sound effects,slide timing, etc.

It should also have a video category named "SEXY" for videos of bikini
contests etc.

Include all the meta data options.  There are some that I always set
(video responses) that are not on the upload page now.

I can't seem to get 'cancel' to cancel (using Firefox v2).

Default for uploads that haven't had metadata entered should maybe be
private instead of titled the filename and made public.

I have a question! If we make our own movies or rather long short
films, could we upload the whole thing if it is under 1GB or do we
have to split it into parts so it will not go over a certain time
limit?

Well...now individuals are posting Please watch in High Quality,
either in their title or on an annotation announcement.  Doesn't make
sense at all.  The default should be high quality, I know you can set
the default for viewing, but the upload default should be high quality
so you don't have to tell people to click High Quality. If people are
on dial up, they should have to click "down" to low quality, not vice
versa.  Virb, vimeo,  and 100's of other servers don't do this, they
just have good video period. It's great that the features are
improved, I'm happy about those, so thank you but the high quality
issue is to frustrating

I asbsolutely LOVE the new uploader! I always wondered if there would
come a day when the updated was fixed. I always thought there should
be a "percent done" counter. Thanks for updating this!

I love the new uploader - the way you can upload more than one video
at once AND enter metadata while the upload is happening (saving time)
is just genius! I do, however, have one problem with it: every video I
upload is uploaded twice - if I upload one video, it uploads twice. If
I upload two videos, they each upload twice, giving me four videos,
and so on. While this is not a major setback - as I can just delete
the duplicates - it would be nice if this was fixed before the new
uploader goes final.

I have found what could be a bug: for the last two videos I have
uploaded, the new uploader just goes on and on and on 'uploading', but
my PC says the Internet connection is no longer being used. When I
check My Videos in another browser tab, the video is there, but with
no data entered during the upload (title, description, etc). So I just
cancel the upload and enter the missing data separately. However, if
this is a bug, it would of course be nice if it could be fixed before
the new uploader goes final.

I'd like to know why, after all these advancements, there are so many
problems with lag and the sync of audio and video. Especially on
something as simple as a direct upload, it's really embarrassing.
MySpace, Stickam, Facebook, Y!Live, BlogTV, Justin.TV, and a number of
other sites do not have this problem, so why is YouTube, the innovator
in video sharing, still so far behind on this simple concept?

I think you should add support to update/upgrade the original quality
of a video. I had to compress a 1GB video down to <100MB and it really
doesn't look that good. I would re-upload the video, but I don't want
to lose the comments that I have.

I still think there should be a status bar showing the status of the
upload, I noticed, that when I had to go back to the old uploader
thwne the new oen was acting up, the old one now has video progress
down where it says "Uploading Please Wait" so why can't you put a
status bar on the new uploader too??

Please put a status bar, I like to know when my video is almost
finished.

Subject: Re: Feedback on New Video Upload Redesign Beta
Hello,

I watched a number of videos regarding Director Status and changed my
account to Director about a month ago, and then today in an attempt to
keep the videos in a logical order I first tried to upload the last
video first of a 5 hour series on "The Chronology Of Humanity" and it
took me a while to figure out how to use the multiuploader.  The
button to browse for my video wasn't marked as browse for video to
upload so, when I clicked it at first I didn't understand what it was
doing ... it took me about half an hour to figure out how to
multiupload.  But now that I understand it seems easy.

Of course, my big complaint is that there is a ten minute limit on
files and I'm not prepared to cut up the series into ten minute
sections.  The videos are already divided up into the Introduction and
then 8 different millennial days having day 7 in two parts and day 8
in three parts already.  So, I am currently trying to find out how to
contact YouTube and see if they are interested in hosting our videos.
The letter is as follows:

Dear Youtube,

We have just completed a 5 hour series on "The Chronology Of
Humanity" (history and prophecy) in 12 parts.  Most are over 10
minutes in length and under 40 minuted in duration.  All are under 100
MB in file size.  We realize that Youtube has a 10 minute restriction
which we have exceeded in all but one of the Chronology videos.

We also have made a series of 9 short videos titled "Synopsis" of the
Introduction and each of the 8 Millennial Days in "The Chronology Of
Humanity" [includes prophecy for the Seventh Millennium which began in
the spring of 1996 AD, and the Eighth Millennium counting From Zero
(Creation)] that run about three minutes on average.

We would like to be able to post all of them on http://www.youtube.com/user/briansestate
in an orderly sequence.

We also have a Chronology Diagram which would allow users to click on
each Day if we were allowed to create a usemap (html) code for that
purpose and upload the diagram and code to Youtube.com.

Also, at the end of each video we would like to be able have it
automatically go to the next video inline.

We realize that viewing the whole Chronology is like attempting to eat
a whole watermelon in one sitting.  So, we purposed that viewers take
one slice at at time and come back again and again.  It's far more
enjoyable when viewed in that manner.  They should be both educational
and entertaining.

Note that the research is our own work.

Can you be of assistance?

Sincerely,George & Dana Brown
(A Father & Son Team)

Right well the progress indicator needs to make an appearance, upload
speeds are always less than download and with anything up to 1GB I
need to know how long its going to take.

A drag and drop 'helicopter' pad would be nice, like in iTunes where
album art can be appended just by dragging and dropping, the same for
uploading files.

Metadata should be automatically garnered from within the file, I
regularly embed it.

The title is right to be the name of the file, but it should omit the
extension and convert to Title Case.

When entering Tags I should only have to type the first letter and I
get suggestions of those tags I have already used, often I conform to
the tag structure I have, you could even add all of YouTubes, but
colouring and raising a users own to the top of the sugestions list,
maybe just the top 5 from the whole community.

Yahoo Answers has some nice web2.0 when entering a question that auto
highlights spelling mistakes, this would be nice in the description
box - they have a nice primary school pencil with rubber tip that
encroaches on the field box. If you bought YA! then you could use it
yourself. You could but del.icio.us and Flickr too - I'm sure the
Google network could do with the graphical effects these guys are good
at.

Add a little map on there too so users can position videos, better
still enable the option to feed in GPX/NMEA files

What's the category for? Isn't that what Tags are for?

This is a computerised service so where possible you can eliminate
errors like typos with suggesting Tags by not offering "compiter"
because hardly anybody uses that, but a lot more use "computer".
Equally converting Tittles to Title Case will make things look nicer.

Hi I made the following post elsewhere it probably should have been
here... apologies if youve had to read it twice...

I completely understand why there needs to be a file size limit, but
why on earth have a time limit? The only thing that matters is
bandwidth not video length.

I didnt realise there was a 10.59min limit, only that there was a 1GB
limit.

Ive spent hours uploading videos that have been rejected and thus
wasting mine and youtube's bandwidth doing so. in some cases theyve
been uploading even after the time/size was well exceeded but they
just carried on loading and wasting bandwidth.

Why oh, why can youtube servers not check the file size (and if
necessary) the
file's time length) PRIOR to upload and immediately tell user the file
is not suitable THEN, so the user doesn't spend hours wasting
everyones time and bandwidth.

like others say a load progress bar would be great

cheers.

The video uploader most certainly needs a progress bar. 60% of the
time that I upload a video to Youtube, the upload fails and I have to
try again. I can leave the upload running for 8 hours without it ever
giving any sign of finishing. A simple progress bar would be
welcomed.

half an hour or more for it to sit there doing nothing.

/sigh
